Vellore is situated about 145 kilometres west of the Chennai and about 211 kilometres east of Bangalore. It is situated on the banks of river Palar in the north-eastern face of Tamil Nadu. The word Vellore has been derived from a combination of two words, the word velmeans spear which is considered to be weapon of Hindu godMuruganand oor- means place. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan is described as a tribal hunter who appeared in a lotus pond with his weapon to attack the enemies.
